Effective immediately, rather than being calculated as two months from the date of publication (i.e. two months and one day), the period to oppose a UK Trademark Application shall be the period of two months beginning with the date on which the Application was published.
For example, under the new rules, the deadline to oppose a UK Trademark Application published on 15 October 2010 would be 14 December 2010. A day shorter than previously.
Since an opposition deadline cannot be extended (except where the potential opponent has filed a request to do so before the expiry of the initial two month period), vigilance must be exercised to ensure that deadlines are timely met.
